Aubrey Lanier and Melvin Scott, Jr. are only in the 8th Grade, but the pair already have college on their minds. Earlier this week, the Dublin Middle Schoolers became the latest Dublin City Schools students to become REACH Scholars!
REACH—Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen—is a key component of the Governor’s Complete College Georgia initiative, which identifies strategies for the state’s public and private colleges to achieve the goal of having 60% of Georgia’s adult population earn some type of postsecondary credential by 2025. Its mission is to provide Georgia’s most promising students with the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school and college prepared for the workforce.
REACH begins in middle school, with teachers and administrators nominating 8th Graders who have demonstrated academic promise as well as good attendance and behavior. By signing their contracts, students commit to maintaining at least a 2.5 grade-point average and remaining free of behavioral issues through high school.
When students successfully complete the REACH program and graduate from high school, they are awarded a $10,000 scholarship—$2,500 per year for up to four years—that can be used at any Georgia HOPE-eligible two- or four-year college.
Scott is a member of Dublin Middle School’s Beta Club, MGMSAA Championship-Winning Football Team, and the DMS Baseball Team. When asked what he’s most excited about, he immediately said, “That I’ll be able to receive $10,000 to further my education in college.” Although he’s still deciding where he’d like to go, Scott says he knows he wants to work in sports medicine.
Similarly, Lanier says she knows exactly what she wants to be when she grows up: a star scientist. She added, “The day I received the scholarship was one of the best moments of my life.”
Dublin City Schools has been naming REACH Scholars since 2016. Thanks to generous donations from community partners like Communities In Schools of Georgia in Laurens/ Twiggs Counties, the district has been able to provide more than 15 students with the opportunity to become REACH Scholars.
